Abstract (EN)

In this research, the way of students interrelating the concept of democracy (which take part in social studies lesson programme) with their lives and in which phase of their lives they use this relation is observed. In order to determine this association, student?s metaphors about the concept of democracy was tried to be revealed. The data of the research was gathered from 17 different primary school?s ,third class primary school students of Çanakkale city center and Kepez country. Totally 1090 students participated in this research. A questionnaire including 7 concepts on democracy and democratic life was applied on students. The data collected was categorized by using utilizing content analysis techniques. The categories generated have been interpreted together with the observations and interviews conducted. With the hermeneutic approach, the state of influencing creation of metaphors in the class has been supported through class observations and interviews. The study shows that the students have difficulty in creating metaphors. It is seen that the students have created metaphors generally on entities within their immediate surroundings. It is clear that the rewieving of the created metaphors by gender variable did not reveal any differences between male and female students as they have both created the same number of metaphors. On the other hand, it is seen that the students, who have ?working mothers? created more metaphors on the ?difference?, ?freedom?, and ?justice? concepts than the others. It is shown in this research that the concepts in the social studies programme are not completely understood by the students that took place in the study. The main reason of this problem could be seen as the complication of the concept and the problem of identification. And it is obvious that these problems decreases the number of students who created metaphors dramatically. Teachers, educational programs and parents have an important role in the students? developing awareness on democracy. Thus, awareness on democracy can be developed by providing training to teachers, supporting activities for educational programs and awareness-raising activities toward parents.
