The achievement and anxiety level of primary school students in math lesson according to their learning styles

The purpose of this research is to identify the achievement and anxiety level of primary school students in math lesson according to their learning styles and whether this situation is differing significantly according to students? genders or not.Descriptive and relational survey method were used in the research. Six hundred ninety two (692) 7th grade students ,who were selected from eight schools in Karşıyaka in İzmir, joined in the research.Kolb Learning Styles Inventory-III which was developed by Kolb, and adapted to Turkish by Gencel (2006) for determining students? learning styles, Math Anxiety Scale which was developed by Erol (1989) for determining math anxiety were used, and 2010/2011 first semester maths lesson school reports were collected to determine students? math achievement.The data was analyzed with means of SPSS 15.0 Windows package software. Frequency and percentage, arithmetic means, standard deviation, Chi-square, independent sample t-test and oneway analysis of variance (ANOVA) technics were used in the analysis.The findings of the research can be summarized as follows:1.It was found that students generally prefer diverging learning style (%33,7).2. It was found that there isn?t a meaningful difference between students? learning styles and their gender.3. It was found that students? math achievements don?t differ significantly according to their learning styles.4. It was found that the math achievements of accommodators and assimilators don?t differ according to their gender. It was determined that the math achievements of divergers and convergers show a meaningful difference according to their gender.5. It was found that the students ,who have diverging, accommodating, converging and assimilating learning styles, have high math anxiety level.6. It was found that the students? math anxiety doesn?t differ according to their gender.Key Words: Learning style, achievement, anxiety, math anxiety.
