The examination of prospective teachers' self perceptions and success-oriented motivations

The purpose of this research is to examine the self-perceptions and success-oriented motivations of pre-service teachers studying at the Education Faculty of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University. The research model is based on the relational scanning model, which is one of the scanning models. The study universe of the research consists of 3650 teacher candidates studying at Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Education Faculty. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 982 teacher candidates, 692 female and 290 male, studying in 9 different departments of the education faculty. In this study, which was conducted to examine the prospective teachers' self-perceptions and their success-oriented motivations as data collection tools; the "Personal Information Form" developed by the researcher, the Turkish form developed by Gilbert, Allan and Trent (1991), the "Social Comparison Scale" organized by N.H. Şahin and Şahin (1992) and the "Success Oriented Motivation Scale" developed by Semerci (2010) were used. The necessary statistical analyzes of the data collected for the problems and sub-problems of the research were made with the help of a computer package program. The frequency and percentage values of the responses of the prospective teachers to the scales were calculated. Mann Whitney U in the analysis of data on gender and department satisfaction; Kruskal Wallis-H Test was used in the analysis of data on the variables of class, department, type of high school graduated from, defining oneself as a democrat or not, and the reason for choosing the department he studied. Correlation analysis was conducted to determine whether there was a relationship between success-oriented motivations of prospective teachers and their self-perception. In the study, while self-perceptions of prospective teachers show a significant difference according to the variables of gender, class level, department of education, education level of parents, self-identification as a democrat or not , department satisfaction; no significant difference was found according to the variables of the type of high school graduated from and the reasons for choosing the department. Also in the research, while success-oriented motivations of teacher candidates show a significant difference according to the variables of class level, department of education, type of high school graduated from, educational status of the mother, education status of the father, self-identification as democrats and department satisfaction, no significant difference was found according to the gender variable. Finally, it was concluded that there is a positive relationship between prospective teachers' self-perceptions and success-oriented motivations.
