Investıgatıon of teacher's opınıon on the usage of museum ın teachıng socıal studıes

Today school has lost its distinction of being the only institution used for education. According to primary education program which in practice, education alone neither done in the classroom nor the main source of school textbooks. The main purpose of social information is to prepare individuals to society. Therefore considering that the real source is outside of the classroom keeping students in the class will not suffice for the realization of this objective. In this context, museums which is one of the main functions of education should be used for educational purposes also in social studies lessons. The main objective of this study to determine their views of Social Studies teacher candidates on the museum use in social studies teaching. The study group comprise including 39 men 36 women, a total of 75 teacher candidates studying in class 3 and 4 of Abant Izzet Baysal University and Gazi University Social Science Education Department. While using the data collection tool in the study which is conducted through qualitative research methods, descriptive analysis technique was used in the analysis of data. As a result of research regarding the concept of the museum social studies teachers notifies a form of opinion are historical artefact, history, culture, ruins, art, history, historical place, cultural heritage, factual information, geography. Candidate teachers expressed their views towards the topics to be covered in the museum contribute at most retention of learned knowledge and abstract information to be concretized. Participant candidate teachers reported view of that while on the museum education necessary our museums are not suitable for education. Additionally the majority of candidate with regard museums and historic sights of the use of the course stated as what has given or will give themselves; acquisition of theoretical knowledge about the museum, before museum, during visits to museums and learning needs to be done later. The candidates have stated the view that mostly course was committed in theory, the portion of practice ignored. In schools where Social studies teacher candidates do internships it has been identified the absence of applications for museum education, those made are composed of museum visits. The majority of teacher candidates was concluded that although they see enough themselves in planning museum trips in phase of application they see themselves insufficient. In the study also result obtained from the findings, giving practical of utilization of museums and historic sites course, to gain information, skill, the values about this issue to teachers and for the effective use of museums in education suggestions were made.
