Examining the relationship between motivation andsocialization levels in sport among prospective teachers: A university case study

Objective: This study examines the relationship between pre-service teachers' motivation levels in sports and their socialization processes, as well as the differences in these variables based on demographic factors such as age, gender, duration, frequency, and purpose of sports participation. It is assumed that motivation in sports shapes individuals' intrinsic and extrinsic drives for physical activity, while socialization enhances their social skills. The research, conducted with 400 pre-service teachers studying at the Faculty of Sport Sciences and the Faculty of Education at Aydın Adnan Menderes University, collected data through an online survey and was designed using a cross-sectional and relational survey model. Materials and Methods: Data analyses were conducted using SPSS 27.0, and the reliability of the scales was verified with Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. Parametric tests were applied to data showing a normal distribution. In addition to descriptive statistics, t-tests and ANOVA were used to identify group differences, Pearson correlation was used to examine relationships, and multiple regression analyses were conducted to test predictive effects. The findings were visually supported with graphs and heatmaps. Conclusion: The findings show that intrinsic motivation and identified regulation have a significant and positive effect on socialization through sports, while external regulation types have no significant impact. Moreover, amotivation was found to be a low-level yet significant predictor of socialization. It was determined that males, individuals who engage in regular and frequent sports, and those who participate in sports for career purposes have higher intrinsic motivation and lower amotivation. Additionally, students from the Faculty of Sport Sciences have higher levels of intrinsic motivation and social interaction compared to students from the Faculty of Education. Results:. This study demonstrates that pre-service teachers' intrinsic motivation plays a significant role in their social skills and interactions, and that participation in sports is beneficial not only physically but also socially and psychologically. To support the professional development and enhance the social integration of pre-service teachers, participation in sports should be encouraged, and social development activities focused on physical engagement should be integrated into educational programs.
