Examination of historical literacy perception levels of prospective teachers

The aim of this study is to determinate the historical literacy perception levels of prospective teachers studying in different undergraduate programs. In this study, scan pattern of quantitative research methods has been used. The study group is consisted of 298 prospective teachers studying in the 3rd grade of different undergraduate programs of Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University, Faculty of Education. "Historical Literacy Perception Scale" developed by researcher has been used in this study as a data collection tool. Historical Literacy Perception Scale has three sub-dimensions; perception, objectivity and consistency. The data obtained has been analyzed with SPSS 22.0 program by considering the sub-dimensions of the scale and the total score. The unrelated samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance have been used to determinate the historical literacy perception levels of prospective teachers. According to results that we have obtained; the program which is studying and gender factor are influent in the sub-dimension of perception and objectivity and final total. The influence of reading to historical books, frequency of historical book reading, watching of historical movies and interest of history class have an influence at the sub-dimension of perception and objectivity, consistency and final total. Moreover, it has been seen that following a historical edition has an influence in the sub-dimension of perception. In the sub-dimension of perception and consistency, whether the history course is compulsory or not and the history course is taught with different methods has an influence. A number of Turkish historical researches who are known influences positively in the sub-dimension of objectivity and final total. It has been determined that the prospective teachers' attitudes for history have been influent on the perception and objectivity sub-dimension of the historical books which they read.
