Factors affecting student's school success according to teachers and school administrators (Van/Erciş example)

Abstract (EN)

There are studies on various topics ranging from social class differences to the quality of the school, from cultural deprivation to cultural differences, or to the relationship between intelligence and racial characteristics. In Turkey, studies are carried out to determine the issues that affect the school success of students who live in rural areas, have different ethnic origins, have a different culture and language than the dominant culture. In this research, which was designed with a qualitative research design and carried out using in-depth interview techniques, it was aimed to determine what factors affect the school success of students living in the east and rural areas of Turkey according to teachers and school administrators. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with 22 teachers and 8 school administrators working in the Ercis district of Van. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively, the factors affecting students' school success were gathered around themes and categories, explained and interpreted. According to the results of the research, factors such as language and communication problems, students' lack of goals and objectives for the future, students' unconsciousness, lack of motivation, lack of role models, and student's insecurity are stated as student-related factors in the study. Factors such as indifference of families, crowded families, financial inadequacies, parent's perspective on education, inadequacy of cooperation between school and parents, and inadequacy of working environment at home were expressed as factors arising from parents in the study. Teachers' experience and willingness, frequent teacher changes, insufficient number of teachers, cultural conflict, lack of communication with students, physical inadequacies and material deficiencies of the school are stated as factors originating from the teacher and the school administration. Geographical location and distance, climatic conditions, belief difference, mother tongue difference, lifestyle difference, lack of equality of opportunity and cultural difference were expressed as the factors affecting the success of the student from a regional perspective.
