Investigation of teachers' marital adjustments and burnout levels by different variables

The research is a descriptive study aiming to examine the marital adjustment and burnout levels of teachers in terms of different variables (school level, age, gender, professional seniority, type of marriage, age of marriage, year of marriage, family structure, number of marriages, number of children) The sample group consists of 213 volunteer teachers working in Çanakkale in the 2018-2019 academic year. The validity and reliability of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (VTE) and Marital Adjustment Scale (ESS) were used as data collection instruments. In addition, a personal information form prepared by the researcher was used to determine the demographic characteristics of the teachers. The research was applied to teachers working in four different levels as kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and high school. A total of 213 teachers were reached. Accordingly, there is a questionnaire filled out by 51 teachers working in kindergarten, 57 working in primary school, 53 working in secondary school, 52 working in high school. As a result of the analysis, a significant difference was found between the teachers' marital adjustment levels and the level of marriage, number of marriages, and choice of profession. Teachers' burnout status was handled according to the levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal failure, which are subscales of burnout inventory. According to the results of the analysis, it was found that teachers' emotional exhaustion levels showed a significant difference according to age. Significant differences were found in the levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal failure according to the school level where teachers worked. The levels of depersonalization of teachers show a significant difference according to the marriage styles. A significant difference was found in the level of personal failure according to the teachers' educational status variable. Significant differences were found in teachers' choice of profession and emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. There is a significant negative correlation between teachers' marital adjustment and emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal failure levels. As the marital adjustment increases, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal failure levels decrease. Keywords: Marriage compliance, marriage, burnout, teacher.
