Abstract (EN)

The aim of this research is to identify the cultural capital competency levels of teachers and to offer suggestions raising existing cultural capital competency level. Cultural capital forms a basis for cultural competencies which are main competencies of teaching profession and it supports pedagogical competences by aiming development of individual capabilities. The research is designed as mixed method. The Cultural Capital Scale was applied and the meaningful results were supported with a qualitative study. For selecting the sample for quantitative study, the research data of "Republic of Turkey Ministry of Development's "Provinces and Regions Socio-Economic Development Ranking Survey" (TCKB, 2013) are taken into account. 15 different provinces in Turkey are determined according to socio-economic status, thus the scale is applied to 2273 teachers working in these provinces. The study group for qualitative study consists of 56 state teachers who are having post-graduate education in the Department of Educational Administration at Dicle University, Turkey. In quantitative phase, "Cultural Capital Scale" is developed by the researchers for the purpose of study and data are analyzed with SPSS program. In the qualitative phase, the data were collected through quasi-structured interview form and presented in the table by content analysis. According to the research results; in Turkey, the teachers' cultural capital competency levels are "high". There is a significant difference in cultural capital competence levels of teachers according to gender, educational background, branch, socio-economic status of the city where the teacher works, mother's educational background, father's educational background, number of siblings, monthly family income, preschool education, the kind of settlement lived for a long time before post-graduate education variables. There is not a significant difference in cultural capital competence levels of teachers according to seniority and the number of family members who had post-graduate education variables. Finally, suggestions are made both for practitioners and for further researches. Keywords: Teacher, Culture, Cultural Capital, Cultural Capital Competencies, Competency Level.
