Abstract (EN)

This study, which aims to examine teachers' ideal perceptions of paternalistic leadership in terms of their personality traits, was designed in a survey model in accordance with the quantitative approach. The target population of the study is the teachers working in Siirt province in the 2022 - 2023 academic year. From this population, 390 teachers and vice principals were reached through convenience sampling. In the study, the "Paternalistic Administrator Behaviors Scale (PAYDA)" developed by Saylık and Aydın (2020) was used to determine ideal perceptions of paternalistic leadership. The scale consists of 30 items and five sub-dimensions: family atmosphere, benevolence, authoritarianism, interventionism, and underestimation. In order to determine personality traits, the "Adjective-Based Personality Test (ABPT)" developed by Bacanlı et al. (2009) was used. The Adjective-Based Personality Test is a scale developed on the basis of the five-factor personality theory. In this context, the scale consists of neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and self-discipline personality traits. In addition, the "Personal Information Form" developed by the researcher was used to determine the demographic characteristics of the participants. The personal information form includes the variables of gender, title, professional seniority, educational status, field of specialization, place of residence and age. Mann Whitney U, Kruskall Wallis H test and correlation analysis were used in data analysis. As a result of the data analysis, it was determined that the participants' ideal perceptions of paternalistic leadership were at a low level for the whole scale. In the sub-dimensions, it was determined that the ideal perception of the family atmosphere and philanthropy sub-dimensions was at a medium level. In addition, while the authoritarianism sub-dimension was idealized at a low level, the ideal perception of the interventionism and incompetence sub-dimensions was determined to be at a very low level. It was concluded that the participants' ideal perceptions of paternalistic leadership showed significant differences in the whole scale according to the variables of gender, title, professional seniority and age, while there was no significant difference in the variables of education level, branch field and place of residence. In terms of the personality traits of the participants, a significant difference was found in the personality trait of neuroticism in the variables of professional seniority and age, while no significant difference was found in other personality traits and variables. Regarding the relationship between the personality traits of the participants and their ideal perceptions of paternalistic leadership, it was found that there was a negative relationship between the personality trait of neuroticism and the subdimensions of family atmosphere and benevolence, and a positive relationship between the sub-dimensions of authoritarianism, interventionism and underestimation. It was concluded that there was a positive relationship between extraversion and the subdimensions of family atmosphere and philanthropy, and a negative relationship between the sub-dimensions of authoritarianism, interventionism and underestimation. It was calculated that there was a positive relationship between openness to experience and family atmosphere and philanthropy sub-dimensions. In addition, it was determined that there was a negative relationship between openness to experience and the mean scores of authoritarianism, interventionism and inadequacy sub-dimensions. It was calculated that there was a positive relationship between teachers' mean scores of agreeableness and philanthropy. On the contrary, it was determined that there was a negative relationship between agreeableness and the sub-dimensions of family atmosphere, authoritarianism, interventionism and perceived inadequacy. There was a positive correlation between the mean scores of self-discipline and the sub-dimensions of family atmosphere and philanthropy, and a negative correlation between the sub-dimensions of authoritarianism, interventionism and perception of inadequacy.
