Integration of the OHSAS 18001 occupational health and safety management system to the ISO 14001 environmental management system: Application to the ceramic industry (sector)

Today, expectations from organizations have incresed in the globalized world. It is notsufficient, any more, to present cheap and quality goods and services and to ensure the qualityof the services. The expectation is that the organizations respect the environment during theproduction of the goods or services with quality, take precautions related to occupational healthand safety and to realize their social responsibilities.The topics covered in this study are the first appearance of the EnvironmentalManagement Systems and ISO 14001 in the world, their development, their spreading, theimplementation of the ISO 14001 system, certification and the principles of continousdevelopment after certification, sustainable development achieved as a result of the positiveeffects of the system on the organizations and the environment. The appearance of theoccupational health and safety concept, its development, the current state of the ocuppationalhealth and safety concept in today's Turkey and the world, work accidents and industrailhygiene, the preparation of procedures that exhibit common structures in the environmentalmanagement and occupational health and safety of the vitrified ceramics industry, thesystematic determination-evaluation of the risk parameters-conditions (indoor immissions,waste gases, solid-liquid chemical materials, particulate matter, noise, etc.) have been analyzedby technical, technological and legal means.ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) applied in the ceramic industryhas been evaluated, the integration of an Occupational Health and Safety Management System(OHSAS 18001) to the current ISO 14001 EMS has been analyzed by legal, technical andtechnological means and the conditions of integration have been determined.Keywords: Environmental Management System, Occupational Health and Safety System,Health, Safety, Environment
