The relationship between marital adjustment, problem solving skills and emotional intelligence levels of married couples who have pre-school aged child

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between marital adjustment, problem solving skills and emotional intelligence levels of married couples who have pre-school aged child. A total of 296 participant (205 female, 91 male) who have preschool aged child educated in Bağcılar, İstanbul were included in the study. Participants were informed about the study and they have filled in Personal Information Form developed by the researcher, and Bar-On Emotional Intelligence Inventory which was adapted to Turkish by Acar, and Marital Problem Solving Scale which were developed by Baugh, Avery and Sheets-Hawoth and standardized in Turkish by Hünler and Gençöz and Marital Adjustment Scale developed by Tutarel-Kışlak. SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows was used to analyze the data. Correlation and regression analayses were applied to reveal the relationship between variables. Independent Samples T-Test and One Way ANOVA were used to indicate the differences of marital adjustment scores, problem solving skills and emotional intelligence levels based on demographical variables. Regression analysis for relationship between marital adjustment, problem solving skills and emotional intelligence levels were statistically significant. There is a significant uphill relationship between emotional intelligence and marital adjustment. Problem solving skills and marital adjustment were also related each other. Results were discussed with the literature.
