Determination of preschool teachers 'in-service training requirements for music course (Example of Gaziantep city)

The aim of this research is to determine the in-service training (IST) needs of preschool teachers related to music lesson. In this study, to define which topics and how extend is concentrated in-service training needs of the teachers who are working in pre-school regarding the music lesson and how these needs differ according to the personal characteristics of the teachers; Moreover it is aimed to offer solutions to the current situation. The research is a descriptive research and it is in the scanning model. In the research, survey technique was used as a data collection tool, and descriptive interpretive analysis was performed on the answers given to the open-ended question. Thepopulation of the research is composed of 662 preschool teachers working in schools that provide preschool education in the central district of Gaziantep Şahinbey. The sample of the research; Of these schools, 312 pre-school teachers who work by random sampling method are formed. In the survey used to collect data; 46 closed-ended questions, 1 open-ended question, classified according to 7 questions related to "Personal Information", "Curriculum", "Music Teaching Methods and Techniques", "Educational Music Reportoire", "Individual and Collective Activities" 54 questions were asked in total. To implement the program and to determine teacher views, scale of "Five Likert" type rating with "none (1), very few (2), partially (3), largely (4), completely (5)" answers was used for 46 closed-ended questions. For statistical analysis of the data obtained, SPSS 22.0 package program was used; in the analysis of the data; Frequency (f), Percent (%), Mann Whitney U, Kruskall Vallis significance tests were used. According to the results of the research, in the last decade Ministry of National Education IST Department Presidency has organized one IST for the preschool teachers in 2011-2012 and 2016 and twice in 2017 were planned but it was found to be canceled. According to the data obtained from the survey; It was concluded that the number of pre-school teachers who participated in the research, who do not participate in the IST related to the music lesson, is considerably higher than the IST participants. They also want to attend one or more ISTs related to the music lesson. In addition, it has been concluded that teachers whose Vocational Seniority is 6-10 years have significantly higher IST requirement than the others when their seniority is considered. It was seen in the research that a significant portion of preschool teachers need in-service training related to music lesson.
