Examınatıon of the perceptıons of the counselors and the supervısors about the professıon who study ın the counseling field

The aim of this study is to examine the perception of counselors and supervisors about the profession who study in the counseling field.The sample of this study comprises 12 supervisors and 12 counselors who work in Ankara, Eskisehir, Giresun, Samsun, Erzurum, Konya, Istanbul, Denizli, Izmir, Malatya, Hatay.The data, which are required of qualitative research method. The interviews are implemented by the researcher who develops the interview form. The data are analyzed using the technique of content analyzing. The data are examined, encoded and converted to the frequency and percentage values according to the categories which are determined before analyzing the data. The results are interpreted in the light of the questions which are asked to the counselors and the supervisors.It is determined that;-There are some problems in the implication aspects of counseling undergraduate education.-The problems are steady in professional identity.-There are more students than experts of counseling at university.-Counselors are not well-educated.-There are some deficiencies in the aspects of counseling.During the undergraduate degree, the courses which comprise especially implication facilitate the counselors? personal studies and implications.It is determined that the counselors and supervisors think that studying four years undergraduate degree is not adequate, master degree or the five years undergraduate degree may be needed.The counselors and the supervisors have the perception that the expectations from the counselors are too high.The supervisors and the counselors think that some competencies are expected from the counselors such as behaving according to the professional principles, being good at the counseling skills, having good personality, having the communication skills and having the responsibility of work which is determined by the regulations.The supervisors and the counselors have more satisfaction in professional adequacy in counseling roles.The supervisors and the counselors think that the in-service education is adequate both quantitively and qualitively.The supervisors and the counselors have the perception that the education is given during the undergraduate degree not suitable for the working field of counseling.The supervisors and the counselors have the perception that the counseling services are not accepted by the parents and the students. However the situation is better than the past.The supervisors and the counselors think that they do not have any relation with the education foundation such as universities and also the counselors and the supervisors have the perception that they find lots of reference resources which they can get help from.The supervisors and the counselors have the perception that they are not aware of the implementation in the counseling field.The counselors and the supervisors think that there are some implication problems in the counseling field which make them more difficult such as deficiencies in counseling and guidance programs which are conducted without preparation, and the absence of the counselors, being not flexible, ignoring the students which are studying in the implementation of mainstreaming program, being not suitable for the level of students.The guidance services which conduct into the school are not enough both the aspect of the quantity and the quality.Although there is a meaningful increase at the level of acceptance of the counselor by the public than the past, the meaningful increase is not adequate for the acceptance which is perceived as required level for the counseling field.The research also shows that the counselors, who work in counseling field, have the perception that their salary is low. It is indicated that supervisors and counselors perceive the supervision is not adequate. Also, it is observed that the supervisors and the counselors do not experience any problems about the professional ethics.
