Effects of activities based on teaching ukulele and classical guitar in accompaniment of school songs on accompaniment skills of secondary school students

In order to determine the effects of activities based on teaching ukulele and classical guitar together in accompaniment of school songs, on the accompaniment skills of secondary school students, the exploratory sequential design was used in this research, which was based on the mixed method. The research is a single-group posttest model in terms of quantitative dimension; in terms of qualitative dimension, it contains the features of case study designs together. The study group of the research consists of 10 students, 7 boys and 3 girls, who volunteered among the students studying at Cumhuriyet Anatolian High School in Kızıltepe district of Mardin province in the 2020-2021 academic year. During the 12-week experimental process, the ukulele and classical guitar curriculum created by the researcher was applied to the students. Since the students had not received instrument training before, no measurements were made before the experimental process. At the end of the experimental process, the Matching Skills Evaluation Form created by the researcher was used to obtain quantitative data, and a student interview form created by the researcher using semi-structured interview technique was used to obtain qualitative data. As a result of the analysis of the quantitative data, it was found that the students' ukulele accompaniment skills differed significantly from their guitar accompaniment skills in technical, musical sub-dimension scores and total scores, and their ukulele accompaniment skills were higher; It has been determined that the effect size of this differentiation is high. As a result of the analysis of the qualitative data, it was concluded that there was a significant difference in the students' views in the direction of being able to apply the left hand technique, playing the sounds correctly, producing a clear sound, and practicing the timing skills in chord transitions more easily than the classical guitar while accompanying with the ukulele. In addition, all students; It has been determined that the ukulele is more suitable for use in music lessons than the classical guitar due to its features such as being easily portable, low cost, easier to learn and suitable for crowded classroom environment.
