The Effects of music types played in school buses on the levels of depression and anxiety of adolescents

THE EFFECTS OF MUSIC TYPES PLAYED IN SCHOOL BUSES ON THE LEVELS OF DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY OF ADOLESCENTS. Şebnem Y.Orhan SUMMARY In this study, the effects of music types that has been played in school buses have been observed - especially the effects on teenagers' depression and anxiety levels at the grades of 7 and 8 in primary education and at the grades of preparatory, 9,10,1 1 in high schools have been observed. These groups have been chosen because of then- ages. A questioneer including 20 questions has been applied to 622 students chosen by random from various state and private schools in the area of Ankara and in its towns. With this research, their favourite music types, singer, songs, their parents' financial status and educational backgrounds, families' musical interests, and the persons who decide the types of music being played in school buses have been discovered. Besides this research, another questioneer including 5 questions has been applied to 63 drivers about their musical interests. After these two studies, the tests of depression and anxiety have been applied to 120 students of 6 schools selected randomly out of 20 schools. While applying these tests, the three most favourite songs from each three most favourite music types have been listened by the students. After each type of music, the tests of depression and anxiety have been applied to the students. By this way, four anxiety and four depression tests have been applied to each student. Finally, the results have been analyzed by the 't' test. It has been seen that different types of music have a different effect on the levels of depression and anxiety of adolescents.
