Emotional intelligence levels of secondary school students participating to school sports

Abstract (EN)

This research was carried out with the aim of " To examine of emotional intelligence levels of secondary school students participating school sports". The sample of the study consists of 543 students who participating in school Sports in secondary schools of Bolu Merkez District. Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory Youth Version (EQ-i:YV) was used to obtain of data and applied to students in 8 secondary schools of Bolu Merkez District. Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory Youth Version (EQ-i:YV) was developed by Reuven Bar-On and James D.A. Parker (2000) to measure the emotional intelligence levels of young people 7-18 and was adapted to Turkish by Köksal (2007). EQ i:YV has six subscales: Interpersonal (12 items), Intrapersonal (6 items), Stress Management (12 items), Adaptability (10 items), General mood (14 items) ve Positive Impression (6 items) and a total of 60 items. The scale is quadruple likert type and the most suitable option is marked ( 1 = Describes me very little, 2 = Describes me a little, 3 = Describes me mostly, 4 = Describes me very much). The lowest score that can taken from the scale is 60, the highest score is 240. SPSS 25.0 package program was used to analyze the obtained data. First, the normality test was carried out and it was seen that the data were normally distributed for all analyzes. Since the data are normally distributed, independent t- test was used in the comparisonof two unrelated samples, and one way variance analysis was used in comparing two unrelated samples. As a result, there was no significant difference between type of sport, Sports branch and number of siblings (p >0.05). In addition to this result, it was understood there was a significant difference in favor of female students in the interpersonal subscale and in favor of male students in the positive impression subscale (p< 0.05). It was understood there was significant differences in adaptability, general mood and positive impression subscales by grade level (p<0.05). It was understood there was significant differences in stres management and positive impression subscales by according to the time of doing sports (p<0.05). It was understood there was significant differences in intrapersonal, stres management, adaptability, general mood and positive impression subscales by according to the parental authority understanding (p<0.05).
