The role of computer-assisted education in pre-school education

THE ROLE OF COMPUTER-ASSISTED EDUCATIONIN PRE-SCHOOL EDUCATION(M.Sc. Thesis)Ahmet Ömer KACARGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYOctober 2006ABSTRACTComparison of Computer Aided Education (CAE) and Traditional Education(TE) in the field of gaining the concepts of numbers (from 1 to 10), shapes(square, circle, triangle, rectangle) to the children in the kindergarten at theage of six and determining the role of CAE in this matter have been thesubject of this study. In this study for the children at the age of six going to thekindergartens of primary schools in Afyonkarahisar central district, the role ofCAE has been studied giving the education of geometrical shapes and theconcepts of numbers by the means of CAE and TE. In this study 80 students(consisted of 38 girls and 42 boys from two primary schools) have beenparticipated. The children were divided to a group of experiment and a group ofcontrol. The education of numbers and shapes was given to the group ofexperiment via CAE while it was given to the group of Control via TE. TheForm of Geometrical Shape Concept (FGSC) and the `Piaget?s test ofConservation of Numbers? were applied as pre-test and final test and the formof `Interview With The Child? and `The Parents Questionnaire Form? have beenapplied for the children participating in the study for the purpose ofdetermining their opinions about computers. After evaluating the results ofFGSC statistically, meaningful differences were observed on the shapecomprehension level of the groups of CAE and TE between the pre and posteducation (p<0.1). The group which had been given CAE was more successfulthen the one had been given TE. In the results of Parents Questionnaire Form?the majority of parents stated that CAE is necessary in preschool education.
