Examining the relationships between positive childhod experiences and tolerance tendencies

Tolerance is seen as a communication process that includes feelings of love, respect, trust and prevents feelings of hostility and hatred. Considering that tolerance is a source of happiness and peace, as well as its contribution to establishing values in social life and strengthening relationships, it seems necessary to examine its relationship with childhood experiences. There is no study examining the relationship between positive childhood experiences and tolerance tendencies. It is thought that the research findings will contribute to psychology and values education studies. The relational screening model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the research. The sample of the research consists of 1250 participants living in different provinces of Turkey. The data was structured as an online survey via Google form and collected via social media accounts and Whatsapp application. "Tolerance Tendency Scale - Adult Form", "Positive Childhood Experiences Scale" and "Personal Information Form" were used as data collection tools. The data of the research were analyzed with the SPSS package program. First of all, to examine the distribution of the data, the histogram graph, kurtosis and skewness values were examined, and parametric tests were used in cases with normal distribution. Spearman's rho was preferred as a non-parametric test in groups where the data were not distributed homogeneously. Analyzes such as percentage, frequency, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, t-test for independent samples, one-way analysis of variance (Oneway ANOVA), correlation analysis and regression analysis were applied to analyze the data depending on the sub-problems. In testing the significance of the differences, the significance level was accepted as .01 and .05. According to the results of the research; It was concluded that adults' general tolerance tendency levels and respect for differences dimension tendencies were at high levels, and their acceptance sub-dimension tendencies were at medium levels. It has also been determined that adult individuals have high levels of positive childhood experiences. In the study, low-level positive significant relationships were found between positive childhood experiences and tolerance tendency levels and sub-dimensions of tolerance tendency levels (acceptance and respect for differences).The study concluded that positive childhood experiences are a predictive variable in determining general tolerance tendencies, acceptance tendencies and respect for differences tendencies. In the study, it was determined that adults' general tolerance tendencies did not differ according to gender, but positive childhood experiences did differ according to gender. It was determined that male adults' positive childhood experience levels were higher than female adults' positive childhood experience levels. In the study, it was determined that the general tolerance tendencies of adults did not differ according to the status of having parents, but positive childhood experiences differed significantly. It was determined that the positive childhood experiences of adults with parents were higher than the positive childhood experiences of adults without parents. The study concluded that the general tolerance and acceptance tendencies of adults with four or more siblings are higher than those with one sibling. It was concluded that there was no significant difference in adults' general tolerance tendencies and positive childhood experience levels according to age. In the study, it was observed that there were significant positive differences between adults' perceptions of having a happy childhood and positive childhood experiences. This situation is also consistent with the scale results.
