Investigation of rheological properties of bitumen binding modified with heavy tire oil made from tires completed service life and nano chrome oxide

Abstract (EN)

The deterioration in the superstructure layers of highways creates serious problems as they increase both traffic safety and repair costs. In order to overcome these problems, modified asphalt is produced and used. Modification process is applied in two different ways as mixture modification and bitumen modification. The recycling rate and techniques of end-of-life tires are increasing worldwide. The economical value of the rubber oil obtained by the pyrolysis method and the product with higher flammability and light fraction are generally considered as liquid fuel. Heavy rubber oil with lower flammability characteristic, which is reserved as a secondary product, is used in diesel generators to meet the electrical needs of the facilities. In this study, the rheological properties of the modified bitumen were investigated by mixing heavy tire oil (HTO) and nano chrome oxide (NCO) obtainedfrom end of life tires with pure bitumen. The penetration, softening point, flash point, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and rotary thin film heating of all samples are added to the pure bituminous binder with 70/100 penetration by adding %1HTO + %1NCO, %2HTO + %2NCO and %3HTO + %3NCO weight experiments (RTFOT) were applied. The samples aged with RTFOT were again applied with penetration, softening point and DSR tests, and after aging with RTFOT+PAV (pressure aging vessel), the change in the rheometer properties of bituminous binders was observed by applying beam bending rheometry (BBR) tests. It has been observed that HTO and NCO reduce the elastic behavior of bitumen to some extent, and at low temperatures, it decreases the resistance against tire tracks. Although it achieved its performance level in the PG64-28 class before aging, it remained within the boundaries of the specification and changed to PG70-34 class after aging. As a result, it has been determined that the addition of additives allows the bitumen binder to become more flexible, and in areas with climatic conditions with low temperatures, bituminous binders modified with HTO and NCO are available.
