Verismo at opera and La Traviata

ABSTRACT This study's goal is to determine the contribution of realism, which started as a literary movement and influenced ail the branches of fine arts, to opera, and to establish the importance and place of La Traviata as an example of this trend. First, the factors that gave birth to the realism movement at the eighteenth and nineteenth century Europe has been examined. Then, the reflections of realism (verismo) trend to opera art has been investigated. Next, the La Traviata opera has been examined. Finally, the place and importance of La Traviata in the context of "Verismo" has been established. II
