Measurement of the distance between the corpus callosum and falx cerebri with potential surgical importance in operation planning

Abstract (EN)
Objective: The aim of our study is to make measurements between the 3 different parts of the CC and the free edge of the FC in normal brain magnetic resonance (MRI) imaging studies and to develop a statistical analysis based on gender and age and to emphasize its potential surgical importance. Materials and Methods: A total of 214 (113 female, 101 male) patients over the age of 18 who applied to Dicle University Medical Faculty Hospital, Radiology Department between January 2022 and December 2022 were included in our study. Conditions such as infection, bleeding, mass, edema, etc. that do not allow a clear distinction between CC and FC or affect this distance were not included in our study. The distance between CC and FC was measured using sagittal planes. Three fixed anatomical points on the CC were used to measure this distance to the FC. In 214 normal neuroimaging studies, 3 anatomical points of the corpus callosum were used to measure the distance to the falx cerebri. IBM SPSS 21.0 for windows statistical package program was used for the statistical evaluation of our data. Findings: 113 female patients with a mean age of 40.28±11.85 years and 101 male patients with a mean age of 41.84±14.90 years were included in the study. 52.80% of the patients are female and 47.20% are male. The results of the distance between CC and FC measured in the sagittal plane in the MRI study were as follows: In women, the distance A; mean 1.6779±0.5154 cm, distance B; mean 1.9352±0.6143 cm, distance C; mean 1.3942±0.4197 cm. In men, distance A; mean 1.9414±0.6368 cm, distance B; mean 2.0557±0.7111 cm, distance C ; mean 1.3966±0.4197 cm. As a result of the statistical analysis of the data obtained in the Mann-Whitney tests, there was no significant difference between men and women in the measurements of A, B, C distances in MRI studies, and in B and C distances. A distance was measured larger in men than in women and showed a significant difference (p=0.002). iv Result: In our study, we showed objective data that the distance between the free edge of the CC and FC on normal brain MRI images is a minimum of 0.85 cm in the genu section and a minimum of 0.45 cm in the trunk section. We also found that the distance from the FC free edge to the CC genu section ( distance A) was greater in males than in females. We think that the anatomical morphometric study between CC and FC will be a guide for a safe surgical approach to the region and will help develop new strategies by fully defining the anatomy of FC and CC.
