Abstract (EN)

The Koçali Dam is a reservoir system located within the Adiyaman Kahta Project, which is located in Adiyaman city northeast of Turkey. The study has two main pivots:(i) Using a genetic algorithms technique to find out an optimum operating strategy for Koçali reservoir. Maximization of the annual hydroelectric power was chosen as the objective function when studying the system and two operating categories were selected (two different objective functions: a. Maximization of stored water in the reservoir, b. Maximization of the amount of releasing water from the reservoir. The performance of this model was tested and evaluated in comparison with the technique of optimum solutions by using linear programming.(ii) Making a simulating model of the reservoir system mentioned above by using Simulink technique which provides Matlab software. The results that were gained from the simulating model good approach between the outputs of the model and that which are gained the data that are observed for this reservoir. Also making a simulating model for the optimum operating policies for the reservoir by using the same outputs which were gained from genetic algorithm technique. The results were very much similar to the same results which were gained from the above mentioned technique. The two above mentioned pivots revealed that adopting an optimum operating policy gives 12% higher production of hydroelectric power and cannot be ignored. Keywords: Genetic algorithms, reservoir operation, dams, hydropower, optimization.
