Abstract (EN)

Understanding the effects of parafunctional habits on jaw functions will contribute to a better understanding of the factors that cause temporomandibular joint dysfunction etiology. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of oral parafunctional habits on jaw functions in individuals between the ages of 18-40. Within the scope of this research, the range of motion of the jaw joint, the mechanical properties of the orofacial muscles, their thickness, activity levels, strengths and pressure pain thresholds, as well as the chronic pain, anxiety, depression and quality of life levels of individuals with parafunctional oral habits will be investigated and compared to individuals with normal oral habits. At least 90 people were planned to participate in the study, 45 with parafunctional habits and 45 with normal oral habits. In order for the study to be more objective, the assessor will be blind and all evaluations will be made by a single physiotherapist. Within the scope of the study, demographic data of the participants will be recorded; anthropometric measurements (height, weight) with meter and scale, muscle pain thresholds with digital algometer, mechanical properties of muscles with myotonometer, jaw joint range of motion with TheraBite range of motion scale, muscle thickness with ultrasonography, muscle activities with superficial electromyography (yEMG), mouth parafunctional habits with "Oral Habits Checklist", pain assessment "Graded Chronic Pain Scale Version 2.0 (GCPS-2)", quality of life "Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-36)", level of disability related to jaw functions " Jaw Functional Limitation Scale- 8 (JFLS-8)", depression level "Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9)" and anxiety level will be evaluated with "Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7)".
