ABSTRACT LOYALTY TO THE ORGANIZATION: AN EXPERIMENT IN THE TURKISH NATIONAL POLICE?S HEADQUARTER Kaya, Onay Master Thesis, Office Management Education Department Chair: Professor Dr. Dilaver TENGİLİMOĞLU April - 2007 This study measures the police loyalty by demographic variables to be able to find out the problems of police who has a duty to solve disagreements, conflicts and other troubles inside the society. It examines the loyalty of police officers to the work which results some organizational behaviors such as leaving from job and absenteeism. Data is collected by a survey which conducted to 260 officers who work in Headquarter of Turkish National Police. Measurements for organizational loyalty are used. In this paper behavior of personnel is measured by determining loyalty level to the organization and comparing their level according to some demographic variables. Some of the important findings of this study are as follow: There is a significant difference in the perception of organizational loyalty, and their sensitivity, persistence between the ranked officials and unranked officials of Turkish National Police who work in headquarter. Perception of loyalty of police officers in the low level indicators of loyalty (sensitivity, normative, and persistence) is found significantly higher than the other ranked officials. There is a significant relationship between the level of education and the level of loyalty to the organization. Level of loyalty to the organization is lower among the personnel who master degree or higher education compared to other education level. Officers who are in the age group between 34-45 has higher level of loyalty to the organization on the sub level of sensitivity and persistency. Personnel who served in the organization between 11-15 years and between 16-20 years perceive higher level of loyalty to the organization comparing to the others. Personnel who are supplied government housing for public officials have higher level of loyalty on the normative level to the organization compared to the personnel who are living in a rental apartment. At the end of the study inferred from the findings of the study necessary recommendations are done.
