Origen's conception of salvation

One of the main purposes of the religion is to prepare believers for the afterlife as well as this world. For this reason, the doctrions about salvation are among the basic teachings of every religion. Although the way to attain to salvation varies from religion to religion, they all basically aim at eternal happiness and salvation. Different ideas about salvation have also been developed within Christianity. The early periods of Christianity draw a very diverse framework in this context. Origen, who lived in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, is one of the theologians who came to prominence during this period. In this thesis, Origen's views on salvation, who is known as the person who systematized the universal understanding of salvation for the first time, are examined. The main goal of the study was to examine which theological doctrines Origen based his understanding of salvation, in regard to his understanding of "apokatastasis", what are the concepts of salvation put forwarded by early Christians and the Bible, and what kind of relationship these have with Origen's understanding of salvation. For the aims of the study, in the first chapter, the definition of the word Apokatastasis, the intellectual climate in Alexandria and the views of salvation of some early Christians are discussed. In the second part, the terms related to salvation and the understanding of salvation contained in the Old Testament and the New Testament are examined. The third part focuses on the understanding of God, creation, spirit, resurrection, free will and apokatastasis around different discussions and interpretations in the context of Origen's understanding of salvation. In the conclusion section, the information obtained in the thesis is discussed in response to the research questions. Key Words: Origen, Salvation, Alexandria, Christianity, Early Period
