The understanding capacity of tissues of green plants, which is in the biology plan secondary school 10th degree by students (Example city of Ankara)

ABSTRACTIt was found out by the researchers, educators and scientists that in biologyeducation vegetal tissue subject and the concepts mentioned in a subject are notunderstood and the students choose learning them by heart as the only successmethod, they do not take it as a behaviour in everyday life.In this study the vegetal tissues, which are in the syllabus of the 10th year,were selected as a subject matter of the research. It was planned to research that howmuch the students can comprehend the subject of vegetal tissues.Comprehension levels of the vegetal tissues by the students, comparison ofthe succes of the students from different schools of different qualities, the probableimportance of the socio-economic status differences in comprehending the vegetaltissues subject by the students, the difficulties that the teachers are in during theireducational period, and their teaching methods were studied. In order to realize thesestudies, a survey for teachers with open-ended questions and an achievement test forthe students were prepared. The study was made through 8 different secondaryeducation organizations, located in the 8 different districts of Ankara centrum, 760students and 14 teachers. The acquired findings were analyzed by using SPSS(Statistical Packet For The Social Science) Statistical program. The findings,acquired form the achievement test, were tested through ?t? test when the number ofgroups is two, and they were tested through variance analysis with the significantlevel of 0,05 when the number of groups are more than two. In the cases that the ?F?value is meaningful Scheffe test was applied in order to find out that the differencestems from which groups and the variance was tested in 0,05 significance level.After the studies, a comprehension level was found out, as per the vegetaltissues, which can be considered low. It was also determined that there are successdifferences between the students from different schhols of different qualities. It wasseen that the socio-economic differences of the students generally effect thecomprehension of the vegetal tissues subject. The goals and behaviours of everyiiiquestion in the achievement test was determined one by one and they were evaluatedaccording to success levels. With the help of the acquired findings it appeared thatthe vegetal tissues subject is a difficult section for students to comprehend. It isnecessary for the students to comprehend the vegetal tissues subject, the studentsshould be urged to be active in the classroom, the concepts which are not Turkishshould be translated into Turkish, the concepts should be correlated with everydaylife, the abstract concepts should be concretized through scheme, illustration, andlaboratory materials and the capability to relate knowledge and concepts should beimproved.Keywords: Biology education, Vegetal tissues, Comprehensibility leveliv
