Abstract (EN)

The objective of this study is to discuss the significance of the Bildungsroman as Althusserian Ideological State Apparatus in the Victorian period through two examples of the Bildungsroman in the mid-Victorian period: David Copperfield (1849-50) and The Mill on the Floss (1860). In the first chapter, economic, social and political background in the Victorian period in which the Bildungsroman gained an increasing popularity is examined. The second chapter focuses on the German concept of the Bildung, which the Bildungsroman is based on. In the examination of the concept, its religious origin as well as the process of secularization it went through are traced. Moreover, its transgression of the German borders, and eventual emergence in England are briefly explained. In the second part of the second chapter, the role that the fe/male Bildungsromane played in the interpellation of the Victorian middle-class men and women is discussed. The discussion is run within the framework of the pattern that was proposed by literary scholar Lorna Ellis. In the last two chapters of this study, in the light of the pattern proposed by Ellis, the process of interpellation both Dickens' male protagonist, David, and Eliot's female protagonist, Maggie, went through are analyzed. Furthermore, the impact of their interpellation on the Victorian middle-class men and women are discussed. Thus, both David Copperfield (1849-50) and The Mill on the Floss (1860) reveal to have served as Ideological State Apparatuses in the Victorian period.
