Effect of active teaching on student success in high school geography course

Aim of the study is to determine if there is effect on student succsess of the active learning approach in teaching according to traditional teaching methods.In this research pre-last teaching method with control group is used in 2009-2010 Education year of Mamak Yavuz Sultan Selim Anatolian High School in Ankara. Selection of subjects are done exactly objectively. Research is applied to 11th class students which are have taken geography courses from the same teacher. Experiment group and control group consist of 20 and 19 students respectively. Teaching for experiment group made by work sheets and activities prepared according to active teaching method and teaching for control group made by traditional teaching methods. By means of data collection a test consist of 32 multiple-choice questions from the chapter ?ecosystem and matter cycle? from different sources is prepared and applied to students. These tests applied to students from experiment and control groups twice before and after the teaching.At the end of the statistical operations, it can be said that active learning approach applied to the group is more effective then the traditional teaching methods in the student success.Key words: Active Learning, Teaching Geography, Environment, Ecosystems.
