Job satisfaction of chemistry teachers in secondary education

For a qualified chemistry teaching it is necessary to determine the personal properties and needs of the chemistry teachers who are the most important element of this education sector. Because these needs determines their job attitudes and behaviours. Job satisfaction being the most important job attitudes affect the motivation and performance. In this study, it is aimed to point out the job satisfaction of chemistry teachers in secondary educations. In the research, a sort of comparison scanning model of the related scanning models was used. The personel properties and job satisfactions of two hundred and one chemistry teachers in Istanbul in 2005-2006 academic year, are identified. Form of the Teacher?s Personal Properties and Minnesota Work Satisfaction Questionnary Scale (MSQ) are used for collecting data. In the study SPSS 13.0 package programme was used for statistical analysis of the data. During the evaluation, identifical analysis for demographical variables, to determine the normalcy of distribution for job satisfaction scale general and subfactor points (intrinsic satisfaction, extrinsic satisfaction) one sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, to determine the difference in job satisfaction scale general and sub-factor points (intrinsic satisfaction, extrinsic satisfaction) for demographical variables independent group ttest, Kruskal Wallis-H test, one way Anova, non-parametrical Mann Whitney-U test are used and 0.05 significance is tested. For the variables gender, age, marital status, having children, number of children, years in service, number of schools she/he worked in, working as a manager, university graduation branch, having an extra job which makes income, sort of extra job, extra income, paying rent for the house no significant difference is found in job satisfaction scale general and sub-factor points. There is a significant difference in job satisfaction scale general and sub-factor points for the variables taking classes except chemistry, existence of another teacher in the family, status and the kind of school, having a car, having in service training, having a master degree, and advicing to became chemistry teacher to others. Some suggestions are brought out in the light of the search results. We expect this research to contribute the new researches and to be a reference for other studies on this subject.
