A study on the organisation of extracurricular sport activities in secondary education, participation problems and solutions

-144- SUMMARY The aim of study is to manisfest participation problems of secondary education institutions in sport organisations in and outside the school and suggest solutions to them. 54 Physical Education Teachers working in secondary institutions in Afyon and its districts took part in this study. In addition to them, a total of 204 sportmens students attending 21 different schools, ten of which are in Afyon and the rest are in the districts, also participated in this study. While a questionnaire of 29 questions were given to the teachers, a questionnaire of 34 questions were given to the students. Although both groups have some questions in common, some of the questions were different. SPSS packet programme was used for evaluation and the data were evaluated in accordance with the percentage and frequency metods. Then the relationship between the opinions of both informant groups were statistically analyzed In x2 0.05 internal. The following conclusions have been drawn from the findings: While the majority of Physical Education Teachers train more than one team, a meaningful relationship between the sex, graduation, experience and administrative responsibilities of the teachers and training a school team cannot be found. Moreover, married Physical Education Teachers train more than one team. It has also been found out that sport activities have not been carried out in accordance with their purposes and plans. As Physical Education Teachers train more than one team. They spare insuffient time to the teams they train. As a result, students have little opportunity to be instructed in their sport branches. Nevertheless, they have been observed to have participated both extracurricular and inside sport activities. Although all of the students-145- have participated regularly, öale students participation has displayed more regularity. As the schools have no clups, teams of schools have not been trained and competed in the name of sport clups. As the only income of the sports branches of schools is collected from the members of the sport branch as defined by the "Sport Branch Regulations", teams competing in groups or semi-finals do not have ony support from the National Education Administrationin the city. As a result, the number of teams participating in this sort of activities is decreasing. Physical Education Teachers have been supported sespectively by school administrators, students, their collegues.and by other teachers. According to Physical Education Teachers, a new model of organisation is needed for sport activities and competitions. Factors such as the risk of failure at subjects, lack of showers at schools, obligation to prepare for University Entrance Examinations, lack of dressing rooms, unsvitability of climate to play sports outside, irregularities of sport activities, inadeguate support from parents, and paying for participation are the main factors prwenting students from participating in sport activities. It has also been found that students who regularly take part in sport activities outside the school and who play sports for only its sake, have participated in sport activities. Another finding of this study is that % 79.6 of the Physical Education Teachers have never been awarded a prize by the school administration. sportsmen students.Physical Education Teachers, Physical Education lessons Schoolmates, families, clups and lastly school administration have played important roles in encouraging students to play sports and participate in sport activities. A meaningful relationship between the execution of sport activities in accordance with its purpose outside the school and participation of students in sport-146- activities is found. However, those who believe in the usefulness of extracurricular sport activities participate more than the others. Inadequacy of closed sport halls, outdoor sport grounds and facilities, lack of adequate teachers, economic status, being far from the contest centre, inadequacy of sportmens students coming from primary education and students lessons have been the main reasons affecting teachers and students alike. The majority of the teachers and sportsmen students (% 91.9 of them) think that sport clups should be established in their schools. Both teachers and students aggree on the idea that "Summer Sport Education Schools" should be opened for extracurricular sport activities and most of them (% 77.5) want to play sports between one hour and twelve hours a week. The following items were thought to be the likely problems that could be faced in sport competitions between schools, during and after the competitions. First of all, this sort of organisations are not generally held in an orderly mannei Secondly. The competition grounds are not healtly and svitable and there aren't adequate health equipmant and police. Thirdly, the dressing rooms are generally unhealthy and dirty and the showers are out of order and insufficient support of the local national press, insufficient support from people and families. Fourthly, closing ceremonies and award ceremony are not held adequately after the competitions and trainings are not continued as preparations for the coming years competitions. However, school administrators, teachers and students usually come to support their teams.
