The perception of high school student's toward physical education teachers' behavior and attitudes of students toward physical education course

The goal of this study was to determine high school students? perception toward their physical education teachers? behaviour in their institutions and students? attitudes toward physical education classes according to their gender, class level and licence in sports.Data was collected during 2006-2007 educational year. Population of this study was 9th ? 10th and 11th grade students who were taking physical education classes (optional or compulsory) from general high schools in Bolu, with a total of 2254.Surveys were distributed to 750 students from 5 high schools which offer 20 hours physical education classes to their students and 697 of them returned back. Gathered data was analyzed by SPSS 15.00. Data, collected by closed questions in surveys which were Physical Education Teacher Behaviour Observation Scale and Physical Education Attitude Scale, was analyzed by using T test, one way ANOVA, Pearson Correlation and Tukey.According to the results of this study, girls? perception of teacher behaviour scale scores ( X= 4.06 ± .56) in class were higher than boys? perception of teacher behaviour scores ( X =4.01± .63).Also, according to the results from teacher behaviour scale scores, students evaluated teachers? behaviour at the end of course were lower than the behaviour at the beginning and development parts. When it was looked by using total scores 9th grade students had higher perception of teacher behaviour scores than 10th and 11th grade students in all parts of the courses ( beginning-development and ending).It was found that teacher behaviour scores according to licence in sports, students with a licence had higher scores than students without a licence.When total attitude scores were compared according to the gender of students, there was no significant difference between boys and girls but it was found that boys? attitudescores ( X= 3.83 ± .68) were higher than girls? scores ( X= 3.83 ± .69)When total attitude scores were compared according to the class level, it was foundthat 9th ( X= 3.91 ± .67) grade students perception of teacher behaviour scores were higherthan 10th ( X= 3.85 ± .73) and 11th ( X= 3.52± .59) grade students.Overall it can be said that when students class level gets higher, their attitude toward physical education course decreased.Students with a licence had higher attitude scores ( X= 4.14 ± .67) than studentswithout a licence ( X= 3.70 ± . 67).
