The evaluation of secondary education students? awareness levels on winter sports (A case study in the province of Kastamonu)

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship among awareness levels by analyzing the secondary education students? cognitive, affective, psychomotor and also general awareness levels on winter sports and to compare the awareness levels found in these fields in the sense of various variables.6789 students from 11 secondary education institutions in Kastamonu who received education in 2008-2009 academic year set the target population of this study in which descriptive model applied and also 656 students who received education in ninth, tenth and eleventh grades of 7 secondary education institutions which offered education in 5 different types set the sample group. In the process of data collection for the study, ?Winter Sports Awareness Level Scale? developed by the researcher was used. This scale which was developed for reaching the aims determined in the study consisted of 2 parts. The first part consisted of 10 items about personal information and the second part also consisted of 35 items analyzing The Secondary Education Students? Awareness Levels on Winter Sports.In the process of developing data collection tool, the students firstly wrote a composition about ?Winter Sports?, after that an item pool containing 120 questions was prepared. In the process of validity of scale, the outline of scale containing 85 questions was prepared by taking expert?s opinion in the content validity, and in the structure validity by making factor and item analysis five point likert scale containing 35 items - 13 cognitive, 13 affective, 9 psychomotor - was developed. Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient was examined and ?=,908 was found for the reliability of scale. The obtained alpha values for the subscales were computed as Cognitive ?=,887, Affective ?=,927, Psychomotor ?=,787.The obtained data was analyzed with SPSS 13 Package Program. The frequency and percentage allocation were used for determining the general distribution features of data; the mean value of opinions about expression in the scale was given. In the analysis of subgoals, firstly it was analyzed with Kolmogorov-Smirnov whether data corresponded the normal distribution or not. For the data showing normal distribution, in the paired comparisons among parametric tests t-test, if the group number is more than two, one-way analysis of variance was applied. If the significant difference was found at the end of the test, in the situations that the variance was homogenous, Post-Hoc Scheffe Test, in the situations that the variance was nonhomogenous, Tamhane?s T2 Test was applied for the aim of determining the differences between which groups. For the data showing non-normal distribution, in the paired comparisons among nonparametric tests Mann-Whitney U, if the group number was more than two, Kruskal Wallis tests was applied. Pearson Correlation Coefficient was computed for ascertaining the relationship between winter sports awareness level and subscales. The error performance in the study was regarded as p<0,05, 0,01 and 0,001.In the consequence of study, secondary education students? general, cognitive and psychomotor awareness on winter sports were found as ?low level?, their affective awareness was also found as ?mid level?. The significant awareness was clearly seen that for general awareness levels of secondary education students? on winter sports according to the variables of school type, class level, mother?s educational background, father?s educational background, father?s job, average monthly income of family, the people playing sports in the family and the people interested in winter sports in the family; for cognitive awareness according to the variables of school type, mother?s educational background, father?s educational background, mother?s job, father?s job, average monthly income of family, the people playing sports in the family and the people interested in winter sports in the family; for affective awareness according to the variables of gender, school type, class level, mother?s educational background, father?s educational background and average monthly income of family; for psychomotor awareness according to the variables of gender, school type, class level and the people interested in winter sports in the family.There was a significant relationship ?positive high level? between secondary education students? general awareness and cognitive and also affective awareness on winter sports, ?positive mid level? between their general awareness and psychomotor awareness, ?positive low level? between their cognitive awareness and affective awareness, ?positive mid level? between cognitive awareness and psychomotor awareness, ?positive low level? affective awareness and psychomotor awareness.
