The skills of the students of secondary education to be able to use the appropriate problem solving strategy

The main goal of this study is to research the effects of the ?teaching situation formed? on the students of 11.grade to be able to use and choose appropriate problem solving strategies.In this study, we used two research method, for quantative data we used one group pre-test post-test design; for qualitative data we used phenomeneographic method. The participant of this research are 11th grade students. The treatment through ? teaching stuation formed? took ten weeks. The data collected by the pre-test, post-test and the tasks which are including specific problems.At the analysis of the data, the problem solutions of the students in the pre-test, the post test and the homework have been examined in point of the skills of being able to use the given strategy and choose the appropriate strategy. The skills of the students to be able to use the given strategy have been examined by paying attention to their frequencies. The appropriate strategies they have chosen during the problem solving have been examined by comparing the pre-test and the post test. The opinions of the students have been compared with phenomenographic method, divided into categories and interpreted.At the end of the analysis, we saw that the ?teaching situation formed? has a positive effect on choosing and using the appropriate strategies and, problem solving skills.It has been observed that the students were aware of the existence of several different problem solving strategies and they tended to use the new strategies they have learnt. We have also seen that ? the teaching stuation formed? is applied more longer period the positive effect on choosing and using the appropriate strategies can be increased.Key words: Problem solving strategies, Problem solving
