Abstract (EN)

Basic purpose of this thesis study is to clarify which strategies are used bysuccessful students in secondary education to remember historical topics.Target population of the study is official high schools under the control ofMinistry of National Education within the boundaries of Ankara province.However, due to high number of such schools, the method of sampling has beenused within the context of this study. Survey which is composed of interviewsand open ended questions has been applied to 120 students of Atatürk AnatolianHigh School at the 9th, 10th and 11th classes. First of all sheets comprising openended questions are distributed to groups composed of six branches with twentystudents in each. Afterwards, their opinions regarding history lesson are taken.On the basis of data derived from the survey and classified by thesurveyor, general results with regard to several strategies used and opinions forhistory lessons are obtained.Within the context of survey, strategies of successful students insecondary education have been examined, and the methods used by them forsustainability of the knowledge provided by lessons have been identified.Moreover, they deliver opinions regarding the alternative methods which can beused in addition to methods used as ordinary teaching activities. Consequently,the methods used by students successful in both history and other lessons areidentified so as to comprehend the basis of their high success level in historylessons.
