The variables of predicting problem solving academic achievement in 2nd(second) class students of a secondary school

The aim of this study is to find out the effect of using reading comprehension strategies, academics achievement in reading and arithmetic operations on academic achievement of problem solving in mathematics. The population of the research is the 2nd graders of all secondary schools in the city centre of Bolu; the samples are the 367 graders of all secondary school students who are chosen through simple random sampling considering the fact of their being able to represent the population. The research is an on relational scanning model. Reading Comprehension Test, Problem Solving Test, Operation Test and Reading Strategies Awareness Scale are applied to the participants used in order to collect data. Pearson Correlation Analysis and Univariate Analysis of Variance were used to analysis the relationships between variables and liner regression model was used to analysis the prediction of the data. As a result of the study, the findings of study showed that there was a medium, positive relation between the academic achievement of problem solving and reading v comprehension and a low level positive relation is found between cognitive awareness, constructing a reading order and after reading comprehension strategies. Also, the results of study showed that reading comprehension and ability on making operations affects problem solving in a positive way; and cognitive awareness, constructing a reading order and after reading comprehension strategies are not affected in a positive way.
