The genres of poem story and epos texts in 5-8 grades of secondary school Turkish classes

As part of our study, the poems in textbooks and workbooks of secondary school Turkish classes (5th – 8th grades) which were prepared for academic year 2017/2018 by the Ministry of National Education were discussed in the context of "poem-story" and "epos." Therefore the study focuses on the genres of "poem-story" and "epos" that revealed at the junction of poem and story. In this respect, the distribution of the texts in textbooks and workbooks of secondary school Turkish classes (5th – 8th grades) which are classified as 'poem-story' and 'epos', according to grades was analyzed and such texts were evaluated with regard to "structure", 'theme', 'language' and 'expression'. Intended purposes of the texts were scrutinized in relation to 'learning outcomes' in 2017 Turkish Course Curriculum. Besides, it was examined how the texts in genres of poem-story and epos used as tool-text were made functional by the activities/questions in textbooks. Thus, the goal of the activities/questions related to texts in genres of poem-story and epos, for students was emphasized as well. It was aimed to remark the functionality of the texts classified as poem-story and epos according to grades of secondary school. Moreover, learning domains in Turkish teaching, the factors that determine selection and use of texts, and text types and, especially learning and teaching processes associated with Turkish teaching and the relationship between activities/questions in respect to Bloom's Taxonomy and the cognitive steps were addressed. In this sense, the place of 'poem-story' and 'epos' genres in secondary school Turkish classes, contributions of the texts in genres of 'poem-story' and 'epos' to Turkish teaching and current status of such categories in textbooks and workbooks of secondary school Turkish classes were manifested.
