Examining the compatibility level of the illustrations with the texts in the secondary school 6th-grade Turkish textbook

This research has been carried out with the aim of revealing the level of the compatibility of the illustrations with the texts in the secondary school 6th-grade Turkish textbook. In this research, the screening model has been used. The study group of the research is consisted of the 6th-grade Turkish textbook which was published by Eksen Publishing and were taught at secondary schools during 2018-2019 academic year and of two participants who work as Turkish language teachers in Sivas. The participants have been selected randomly by random sampling method. The document analysis technique has been used to collect the research data. The "Illustration-Text Relevance Category List", in which the participants expressed their opinions independently and impartially, has been used as the data collection tool. The collected data have been analyzed and interpreted with the descriptive analysis approach. According to the results of the research, it has been seen that the illustrations will enable students to predict the texts at a high level; they highly support the headings of the texts they belong to and are highly compatible with the contents of the text they belong to; their level of supporting the main idea/main feeling of the texts they belong to is a bit more than medium level; the ground-background relationship is highly taken into consideration in the placement of the illustrations and texts and; the colors used in the pictures are vivid, clear and remarkable but the illustrations will make the students gain just a medium level of aesthetical pleasure. All the results and findings obtained from the research have been discussed and then some suggestions have been made.
