Investigation of parental opinions about homework's given in secondary school mathematics course in terms of some variables

The purpose of this study is to examine the opinions of parents about the homework given in secondary school mathematics course in terms of some variables. The research done is on the survey model. The parents of 174 students from three different secondary schools in the province of Battalgazi, Malatya constituted the participants. "Parent's Opinion Form for Mathematics Assignments" was prepared in order to determine the opinions of the parents. Parents' personal information is presented with tables and graphs using frequency and percentage values and open-ended questions are examined in context of content analysis and categories. Codes within three themes (academic achievement, control and feedback, help) obtained from research data were explained and interpreted according to different variables. In the research findings about the context of academic achievement, in the concept of assignment for parents; it has been seen that they reinforce and reinforce the topics, have a better grasp of the knowledge and make it persistent, the students change the way of thinking and develop their minds and give them procedural fluency. In addition, it has been determined that the view that mathematics assignments enhance academic achievement is adopted by the majority of women parents who graduated primary school and dealing with other professions and with ages of 38-42 years and have a salary less than 1400 TL. According to the findings obtained within the context of control and feedback, it is determined that parents have opinions about following issues. According to them, assignments should be checked and controlled, feedback and correction should be provided, and if the teacher does not control the assignments, homework is not done. Expert feedback is needed to control the homework, and this feedback gives a reflection for the teacher in the teaching process. In addition, it has been determined that the view that the assignments of mathematics class should be checked by teachers is mostly adopted by the majority of women parents who graduated primary school and dealing with other professions and with ages of 38-42 years and have a salary less than 1400 TL. According to the findings obtained within the scope of the aid theme; parents expressed their opinions about that they help their children with their assignments as much as they can do when the children do not understand or do not know. In addition, it has been determined that the view that to help at the assignments of mathematics class is mostly adopted by the majority of women parents who has bachelor degree and with ages of 38-42 years and have a salary less than 1400 TL. Besides, it has been determined that the view that they cannot help at assignments because lack of information is mostly adopted by the majority of parents who graduated primary school and have a salary less than 1400 TL.
