Mathematical concern and perceived teacher attitude in middle school students

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to examine if there is a connection between student's math anxiety level with their attitudes towards teacher and the lesson itself or not. In addition, the effects of variables on mathematics anxiety will be investigated such as gender, parental education status, receiving special mathematics lesson, number of siblings, family income status and receiving support from the family in mathematics. The sample of this research consisted of 471 students who were selected from three secondary schools selected by random selection method from Istanbul. 238 of the students are male, 233 are female students. The data collection tools consist of a personal ınformation form in which demographic information is obtained and a mathematics anxiety scale which obtoins 30 descriptive questions about math anxiety. In this study, the data were collected through the Mathematics Anxiety Scale consisting of 30 questions and the questionnaires were applied to the students during the interviews. The data were collected and analyzed with SPSS 24. As a result of analyzes made, the math anxiety in students; determined that there is a negative relation between with the father's educational level, family's economical income, love of teacher, liking of lesson and positive attitude towards teaching. Female students, the students who take private lessons and the students who are not supported from their families have higher anxiety.
