Determining the digital literacy levels of secondary school students

Abstract (EN)

This research aims to examine the digital literacy skills of secondary school students in terms of various variables. The research was carried out in the survey model, which is one of the quantitative research methods. The study group of the research consists of 632 students studying in 5th, 6th, and 7th grades in 5 different secondary schools from the lower, middle, and upper socioeconomic levels in the central district of Gaziantep in the 2020-2021 academic year. Personal Information Form developed by the researcher and Digital Literacy Scale developed by Pala (2019) were used as data collection tools in the research. The data obtained during the analysis of the data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 program, and non-parametric tests such as the Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal Wallis H test used since the descriptive statistics and the distribution of the obtained data did not show normality. As a result of the analysis of the data obtained, it was found that the Digital Literacy Scale scores of the students differed significantly according to gender, grade levels, mother's education level, father's education level, internet connection status at home, presence of a computer or tablet at home, family income status, frequency of connecting to the internet. There was no significant difference between the data obtained from the Digital Literacy Scale according to the number of siblings, mother's occupation, father's occupation, and internet usage purposes. Based on the results obtained from the research, suggestions were made such as conducting deeper research to present data for different studies on the subject.
