Abstract (EN)

Motivation factor plays a key role in gaining desired behaviours in education. It is important for teachers to have descriptive and diagnostic information about the student's motivation to read books in planning the guiding and encouraging activities. Today, with the developments in science and technology and the innovations brought by the age, determining the motivation components of students for reading books through a standard scale will contribute to clearly revealing the situation, analysing and interpreting the situation and suggesting solutions. The purpose of this study is to develop an original and multidimensional scale in order to determine the structure and dimensions of secondary school students' motivation to read books, and to research the reading book motivation of secondary school students by implementing the developed scale. The research method is the screening model, one of the quantitative research methods. The study group of the research consists of 943 students (EFA: 392, CFA: 312, application: 239) selected by simple random sampling from five secondary schools in Malatya. The Book Reading Motivation Scale (KOMÖ) consisting of 4 factors and 20 items, whose validity and reliability was determined by the research, has been developed. There are two categories of motivation to read books, namely "internal and external motivation"; It consists of four dimensions: "value, positive attitude, appreciation and competition". The developed scale was applied to secondary school students and the motivation for reading books was determined that there was a significant difference in the sub-dimension of appreciation according to the gender variable, and in the sub-dimension of appreciation and competition according to the grade level variable. The research guides the studies to be done to create a reading culture in students and to recognize, understand and develop the reader identities of the students.
