A sociolinguistic view of difference between oral and written expression skills in secondary school students

The purpose of this study is to determine dialect characterictics as a language variable in oral expression and written expression of secondary school students and analyze the results in terms of sociolinguistic variables. This research was carried out with descriptive case study, one of the qualitative research methods. Document analysis method and unstructured interview method were used while collecting data for research. Research was carried out with descriptive analysis and content analysis which are among thequalitative research patterns.The Study was conducted with 182 secondary school students. When creating study group, purposive sampling, one of the maximum diversity samplings, was used. Oral and written expression studies were made for students and dialect characteristics were determined of the study. In Results, these dialect characteristics were analyzed in terms of sociolinguistic variables such as gender, sociocultural charasteristics and grade. Afterwards, determined dialect characteristics were analyzed in two groups as phonology and morphology. As a result of research, information about detremined dialect characteristics was given and solutions were tried to be proposed to research question. This research is considered to provide benefit to future researches in devoloping sociolinguistics in our country and Turkish language teachers.
