Perceptions of success with middle school student's sportsmanship behaviors

Abstract (EN)

Introduction and Objective: Sportsmanship is a concept that contains moral values together with the physical education and sports that are in and of the whole of life. There are many concepts that affect sportsmanship. One of them is considered as a perception of success. In this study, it was aimed to examine the sporting behaviors and perceptions of success of middle school students. Materials and Methods: A total of 845 randomly selected research samples were collected from the state and private schools in the Erzincan province center during the academic year of 2016-2017. "Physical Education Classroom Sportsmanship Behavior Scale" (BEDSDÖ) was used to collect data which are developed by KOÇ (2013) and "Success perception inventory of children version" was used which are developed by Roberts, Treasure and Balague (1998) translated by Kazak Çetinkalp (2009). In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistical techniques, Independent Sample T test for binary group comparisons and Tukey HSD test with One-Way Anova for multiple group comparisons. Simple linear regression analysis was applied to find out success predict sportsmanship behaviors. Findings: Due to findings; there was a significant difference in the students' sportsmanship behaviors and achievement perceptions according to gender, class levels, school achievement level, sports types and club sportsmen, but there was no significant difference due to parental education level, school sports status and family income level. It was understood that the level of task orientation of secondary school students predicts 5% of positive behaviors and 2% of total sportsmanship behaviors. It was also found that the ego orientations of the students significantly predicted 2% of the avoidance behaviors from negative behaviors. Conclusion: In the middle school students, it was understood that sportsmanship behaviors and success perceptions differ according to various variables and that success perception predicts sportsmanship behaviors.
