Investigation of secondary school students' attitudes towards Turkish lesson with CHAID Analysis in terms of various variables

The aim of this research is to determine the attitudes of secondary school students towards Turkish lesson and to investigate the factors affecting these attitudes with CHAID analysis. The sample of the study in which the relational scanning model was used among the quantitative research methods consisted of 1141 secondary school students, 604 of them were girls and 583 of them were boys, studying in Esenler district of Istanbul in 2019-2020 academic year. The attitudes of the students towards Turkish lesson were obtained by means of the "Attitude towards Turkish Lesson Scale" developed by Topçuoğlu Ünal and Köse (2014). The One Sample t-Test was used to determine the students' attitudes towards the Turkish lesson, and the CHAID analysis was used to determine the factors affecting the attitudes. The analysis of the data was made with IBM SPSS Statistics (v23) and Amos Graphics (v24) statistical package programs. According to the results obtained from the research, the attitudes of the students towards Turkish lessons are moderately positive. The variable having the highest effect on the attitudes of the students towards Turkish lesson was determined as "class level". Other variables that influence the attitudes of students towards Turkish lesson are: "time allocated to the game and social media in electronic environment, average of Turkish lesson, average daily reading time, type of school they study, gender, teaching style applied at school, daily time allocated to study and educational status of their fathers".
