Perceptions of secondary school teachers about emotional abuse (mobbing): Sample of Bolu

The purpose of this research is to define the level of mobbing in educational organisations (secondary schools), which is a newly realised problem to be solved, and explain the thoughts of teachers who work in Secondary Schools in the center of Bolu on this matter. The survey research method was used in this study. The target population of the study is teachers who work in the secondary schools in the center of Bolu, in the academic year 2013-2014. Considering the target population, it was aimed to interview with 635 teachers in total, who work in 29 secondary schools. Sampling was disregarded since it was assumed to reach all the population during the research. 477 volunteer teachers were interviewed in total, but 158 teachers could not be reached for some reasons like having medical report, maternity-leave or reluctance. While collecting research data, "Mobbing Survey" was used, which consists of 21 items, translated from Einarsen and Raknes's (1997) "Negative Acts Questionnaire scale" by Cemaloğlu(2007) and then developed by Ocak(2008). After getting permissions and completing necessary procedures, the investigator distributed the mobbing survey to the recipients and then collected them by himself. According to the results of the research, the thoughts of the teachers about mobbing are at a low level overall. Teachers perception about emotional abuse behaviour types which is more exposed, sorted as according to the arithmetic average of received answers from the scale "Precluding the possibility of self-actualisation", "Attitudes that preclude communication", "Attitudes that affect quality of life and professional reputation", "Attitudes that affect social relations", "Attitudes that harm personal reputation", "Attitudes that interfere with privacy", and "Personal violence", respectively.
