Investigation of burnout levels and organizational commitment levels of secondary school teachers

Teaching profession is at the beginning of the professions that increase daily importance from past to present day by day. The teaching profession, which is one of the most sacred professions in almost every country in the world, is also one of the most stressful and exhausting professions at the same time. Teachers whose tolerance for making mistakes is low due to their responsibilities are among the people that have burnout mostly due to this stressful situation. Burnout causes physical, psychological and spiritual negative effects on people. Teachers should have high levels of commitment to the work they love and work in order to be successful in their profession and to be able to train well-equipped generations from all angles. Burnout negatively affects organizational commitment. A total of 372 teachers were interviewed in this study, in order to examine the levels of burnout and organizational commitment of secondary school teachers. Questionnaire method was used as data collection tool in the study. The obtained data were analyzed with SPSS 22.0 package program. Percent distributions, mean and standard deviation values were given as descriptive statistics in the study, t test was used for comparisons of parametric binary variables and one way anova were used for multiple groups. Pearson's Correlation analysis was used in order to detect the correlation between burnout and organizational commitment. The obtained results considered at 95% (p<0.05). As a result of the statistical analyses it has been seen that there is a negative, weak and significant correlation between burnout and organizational commitment.
