Abstract (EN)
The relationship between Map Reading Skills, taught in social studies, and geocaching is an area of study and research into the possibilities of effectively combining theoretical learning with the application of knowledge in real-world situations. Map literacy is the set of knowledge, skills, and abilities that enable a person to understand and use maps, as well as navigate. As part of the school's social studies curriculum, students are taught the fundamentals of cartography, such as reading maps, using symbols, and working with different types of maps. Geocaching is a fun activity in which participants use GPS devices to search for geocaches hidden in various locations. Each box contains a journal and small items that can be taken or left behind. Coordinates for searching for hidden locations can be obtained through specialized websites or mobile apps. This process requires participants to be able to work with maps and use navigation technologies. While students can use map reading and coordinate skills learned in the Map Literacy Skills development course to locate hidden objects, geocaching also helps develop new skills, such as using GPS navigation devices and mobile apps for orientation. Incorporating geocaching into the educational process increases students' interest in geography and teaches them to see the connection between theory and practice. Learning based on games and real-life tasks has been shown to have much greater motivational power than traditional teaching methods. Geocaching not only develops map literacy but also other important skills such as logical thinking, teamwork, and route planning, and reinforces their understanding of the nature around us. Incorporating geocaching elements into school social studies can be implemented through field lessons, field trips, and special projects. For example, students can develop their own routes to find hidden boxes, learn how to use maps and plan optimal routes, and then use GPS devices to complete tasks. This process allows students to integrate classroom knowledge into real-life situations and develop skills such as independence, responsibility, and the ability to solve non-standard problems, which will be useful in their future lives. Geocaching also fosters interest in geography and ecology by allowing participants to explore natural areas, landscapes, and ecosystems. This contributes to the development of environmental awareness and respect for the environment, which is particularly important in the modern world, where environmental protection and sustainable development are increasingly important. Therefore, the connection between the Map Literacy Skills course in the Ministry's curriculum and geocaching mutually contributes to student learning and development in both aspects. Geocaching not only develops the skills necessary for detailed acquisition of geographic information, including orientation, map making, and the use of modern technologies, but also positively impacts the development of the fundamental competencies necessary for a successful life in the modern world.
