Effects of proverbs and idioms in the secondary school Turkish course books, on student's language using

Proverbs are words that are told on the basis of long trials and observations, idioms are usually phrases of stereotypes that have a distinctive meaning, rather than a real sense. The purpose of the research is to examine and analyze the effects of the idioms and proverbs used in secondary school Turkish textbooks by using language by using descriptive analysis and questionnaire methods.In this study, proverbs-phrases and passage frequency in the secondary school Turkish textbooks (5-7) were determined. 1090 proverbs and phrases have been found to have a total of 1686 repetitions in the textbooks identified and examined. Between February 2017 and March 2017, 964 student questionnaires were administered in 3 different middle schools, and the answers were analyzed by descriptive analysis. The students' responses to the Likert type attitude scale were evaluated in the IBM SPSS (Statistics Package For Social Sciences) 23.00 package program. As a result of the study, it has been found out that secondary school Turkish textbooks are rich in terms of idioms but very inadequate in terms of proverbs. Students define proverbs better than phrases and use them more often. However, although there is no significant difference, the number of idioms that are known is more than the number of proverbs (146 idioms 479 usage frequency, 118 proverbs 1258 usage frequency). The words used by the students in the spoken language are mainly distorted Turkish words and properly used English words. The importance given to Turkish is low. While students often use expressions in written language, they prefer to stay in their daily conversations. The difference between the written and spoken languages of the students was determined. The results obtained without the research in the discussion section were compared with the results of similar studies briefly mentioned in the related researches. In the Suggestions section, some recommendations have been made to authors, publishers and researchers.
