Abstract (EN)

While gender roles create suppression over individuals regardless of their genders, mostly women have been exposed to this suppression and they also have been excluded from every area in the society. So that they have not been able to do art and have been kept away from all of their passions and dreams for a long time. In fact, they had to hide their names or had to use male nicknames. This also have happened in public life and woman on the streets have been described as "unwanted". Women were only granted the rights to be mothers and wives. Woman movements which began long before the 17th century, have not got their rightful place on the pages of history due to the fact that those movements have been suppressed by society. Patriarchal history writing gave place to women who support the patriarchal discourse by consolidating the system. When woman, who sanctified as mother in the pages of history, seen in male-dominated areas of public life, they could be described as scheming and destructive for the state. Like history, the press has been also one of the areas in which the patriarchal structure is strengthened. Both used languages against women and news about women supported this fact. Newspapers, journals and magazines gave place to women mostly in their fashion and advertising pages. At the same time they continued to sanctified woman as mother in their pages. Also, the language used in the news has been filled with sexist discourses. Besides, the representation of women have been problematic in many aspect through the history of media. Based on those thoughts, the aim of this thesis, which the source scanning method is preferred, is to examine the role of women in the press, the language used in the news about women and to address the reflection of the change experienced by women in the press in particular with its political dimension until today.
